OH MY. I have been THRILL-RIDDEN.
Ahem. It’s almost impossible not to compare Before I Go To Sleep with
That Other Book Where The Girl’s Memory Re-Sets While She’s SleepingForgotten, but whereas that one had Secrets and Lies of the parental and romantical sort (I don’t want to say YA-level secrets because WE ALL KNOW YA DEALS WITH REAL SHITS SOMETIMES so let’s say cliché-YA-level secrets), this one has Surrious Danger Lurking.
Ok so Christine’s memory re-sets while she’s sleeping, but unlike in Forgotten she doesn’t
see ‘remember’ the future either, so she wakes up every morning all WHERE AM I WHOSE BED IS THIS WHO IS THIS MAN HOW ARE MY HANDS SO OLD and her husband Ben has to be all like, I’m Ben and we’re married and in our mid-forties and you were hit by a car and have The Amnesia and here are photos of us and here’s what a cell phone is and now I have to go to work so try not to wander off.
Ok but then she gets a phone call from a dude who’s all, I’m your neuro-doctor and your husband doesn’t know you see me and here’s the journal he doesn’t know you keep that you gave me to read, and then you (and Christine) read the journal to figure out what our life is in this memory-less state and how we got here and what we do now and Something is Not Right. Starting with the scrawl at the beginning that’s all, Don’t trust Ben.
And I was super-concerned at SEVERAL POINTS that the Ominous Tone was going to lead to Insipid Revelations, because I am a MAJOR FAN of Ominous Tone, but it needs to be justified. If it’s not a severed head, I’m going to be very upset. And Christine keeps ‘figuring out’ what’s ‘going on’ and I am like, LAME, but then *twist* and new evidence surfaces and I am like, ZOMG TELL ME MORE.
Also there are some intelligent muse-y bits about who and what we are if not aggregations of memory, etc etc etc HEART-POUNDING ACTION.
