Disclaimer: Amy the Super-Marvelous sent this to me in the mail because I was zillionth on my library queue and she is kind and merciful. I read it the day after my surgery and reviewed it right away while I was still terribly, terribly high. I’d considered re-reviewing it, but I think this more or less captures how I still feel.
Flashback to a month ago:
Ok, maybe I am all hopped up on T3s, and by ‘maybe’ I mean ‘hells to the yes I am,’ because I tried being tough and things but skipping the pain meds just gave me a raging case of Hot-Face and then we had to sleep with the fan on EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE IN THE ROOM WAS FREEZING except my face, which was hot. ANYway, this might just be the medz speaking but shit you guys. This is not what I expected.
Ok, there is literally nothing I can say that won’t spoil The Hunger Games even a little bit so let’s just go with the obvious: Katniss survives. Also, Peeta. Also, though he is never in any real danger, Gale. Now it is time for us all to Catch Fire.
And at the end of HG I still wasn’t totally on board with the whole romance element but now I am DRIVING this bandwagon. Because the Gale/Peeta/Katniss triangle isn’t just an excuse for cozy moments and sweet awkwards. It makes everything more stressful and there are times when I sincerely wish she only had the ONE guy to worry about because THIS IS TOO HARD ON ME!!! I mean, the whole Team Edward/Jacob deal is complete bullshit, because Bella is with Edward and Jacob is just a token rival inserted for obligatory tension and posturing and winsome jealousy. But Katniss could GENUINELY join either Team Peeta or Team Gale at this point, or Team Neither! I would not be surprised if she ends up totally alone at the end of book 3 because Collins has those kinds of balls.
Also, I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY MADE THEM DO THAT THING THAT THEY MADE THEM DO!! I.e., the plot of the book blew my mind. Urgh, unspoilerishness is hard! But srsly, I was simultaneously PISSED and HORRIFIED and also EAGER, because we read for the zomgs, right?
Right. This review has jumped the shark. Let the waiting-on-book-3 begin!
